Topic
Commercialisation and Licensing
Owning a patent is not the same as earning from it. Between the grant and the first payment sit decisions about who should make the product, who should sell it, and on what terms. This topic looks at those decisions and at how the right counterparty is found.
What It Means
The route from a protected invention to income: making the product yourself, licensing it to a company better placed to sell it, or combining the two. It includes finding that company and judging what the invention is worth to it.
What You Take Away
- Inventors and corporate IP leaders in the same conversation about licensing.
- A way of choosing between making, licensing and partnering.
- Questions to settle before a first meeting with a possible licensee.
Make it yourself or let others
Some inventions are best taken to market by their owner. Others are worth more in the hands of a company that already has the factory, the channel or the customers. Sessions work through how an inventor or a corporate IP team can tell which case they are in.
Finding the other side
A licence needs a licensee, and finding one is a matching problem: the invention has to fit a company's products, its markets and its appetite for risk. Attendees compare notes on how introductions actually happen and what makes a first conversation productive.
Going in with a clear view of value
Negotiation goes better when each side has thought about what the invention is worth to the other. The discussion covers the questions to settle beforehand and the ones worth leaving open.
In the United States
Austin, Plano, El Paso and the Americas strategy workshop in Houston give this topic four angles within the United States programme: from idea to customer, from patent to licence, taking a product across a national border, and the whole commercial path for teams working across the Americas.
